lawUMK Guide to Finances 201

I was invited yesterday (10 March) to speak to a group of men on finance. Now seeing that the topic of money is a broad one (and my audience comprised of mainly successful people), I focused my talk on ‘establishing the yardsticks by which your cash outflow should be measured’ under the theme: ‘you cannot manage what you do not measure’.

My conference notes can be downloaded by visiting – also find a summary below:

Suggested Yardsticks

The list below is a personal suggestion and should be utilised with wisdom.

1, GOD
(Tithes, Offerings, Donations, Missions, Gifts and Pledges)

– Acknowledge that God owns it all – Psalm 24:1,
– 10% of tithes was commanded – Numbers 18:8 – Ezekiel 44:30,
– Contributing towards the welfare of your local pastor – Galatians 6:6,
– The church is Gods people responding to the great commission – Ephesians 4:12
– Understanding the concept of first fruits – wrt: offerings – Leviticus 23:14,
2, NOW
(Food, Shelter Clothing and Security)

– 1 Timothy 5:8 compares one who has failed to provide for their household to an unbeliever.
(Poor Amongst Us, Needy in Community, Charity, Humanitarian Programs)

One of the most commonly believed myths concerning the afterlife is the notion that, in Heaven, eternal life is our only reward. Everyone’s rank will be equal in God’s eyes. This monolithic view of Heaven has us spending a large portion of eternity sitting on clouds, strumming our harps and preening our new wings. – Todd Strandberg

“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. (NIV, Matthew 6:19-21)

– Giving to the poor is giving to the Lord – Proverbs 19:17
– It is pleasing to the Lord – Hebrews 13:16,
– Better to give than to receive – Acts 20:35,
– God loves a cheerful giver – 2 Corinthians 9:7,
– Give and you will receive – Luke 6:38
(Savings, Emergency Funds, Retirement Funds, Your Children, Future Generations)

– Characteristics of a good Man – Proverbs 13:22
– Characteristics of a wise man – Proverbs 27:12
– Parable of the virgins (Trusting God vs Emergency Funds)
– Emergency funds – Ecclesiastes 11:2,
(House, Clothes, Cars, Jewellry etc)

– Diligence maketh rich – Proverbs 10:4
– Blessings from God – Genesis 26:12
– The desires of your heart – Psalm 37:4
– You deserve your wages – 1 Timothy 5:18

The onus then is on you to decide how your monthly income is exhausted – use the chart below to measure your cash outflow moving forward.

God ____%
Now ____%
Others ____%
Later ____%
Ball ____%
